He ended them, and then he said to the people, "The kingdom of God shall be taken from you and given to a nation that will bring forth the fruits of it," (Matthew 21:43). which is to be understood not in an ill sense, as the man hid his talent in a napkin, and in the earth; but in a good sense, and designs his care of it; his laying it up in his heart, that he might not lose it, and that it might not be taken away from him: and for joy thereof; Whatever the reason he was there, he found an amazing treasure, maybe similar to the emeralds. These two short parables tell the story of the whole Bible. Behold, your house is left unto you desolate. Jesus said, "The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which someone found and hid; then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. There is nothing that even compares to a loving relationship with the Creator of the universe! He went into the city riding upon an ass in fulfillment of the prophecy of Zechariah, "Behold, your king is coming to you, humble, and mounted on an ass, on a colt the foal of an ass," (Matthew 21:5, Zechariah 9:9). Their hearts receive the message of the kingdom, and the seed takes root and produces lots of spiritual fruit. But these last three were spoken only to the men of faith, the disciples, who were ready to believe what God said. By that he indicated that the privilege of demonstrating the grace of God would he taken from Israel and given to the church. c. The enemy who sowed them is the devil: Clearly, the enemy plants counterfeits in the world and in the kingdom community, and this is why merely being a member of the Christian community isnt enough. In the short course of the three and a half years of our Lord's ministry he uncovered the treasure of Israel, the secret of this nation's life. Through the pages of the Word of God we are afforded tremendous insights into life. Yet it can also be asked out of deep appreciation of the fact that the Son of God took such a noble, lowly place. Years ago I was struck by the closing words of a great address that Winston Churchill gave at Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1950: What prizes lie before all the people if they are worthy of them: peace, food, happiness, leisure, wealth for the masses never known nor dreamed of, the glorious advance into a period of rest and safety for all the hundreds of millions of homes where little children play by the fire, and girls grow up in all their beauty, and young men strive and win in the free enterprise of life. This is what Paul tells us in the ninth, tenth, and eleventh chapters of Romans. Say: Pearls come from oysters. And now, lastly, let us look at the point where the parables converge. (Spurgeon), Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking beautiful pearls, who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had and bought it.. But we need to recognize that the parable of the treasure hidden in the field is the first of a series of three which our Lord gave in connection with the other four and on the same day, but, as Matthew is careful to tell us, he gave these to the disciples alone after they had gone back into the house. Yet they do, and are worthy of respect because of that role. In this parable, we learned that different people hear Gods truth and accept it in different ways. Some time ago, in addressing a crowd of 2,500 delegates from 57 countries of the world who were trying to find some way to world peace, he said these remarkable words: "What element is lacking so that with all our skill and all our knowledge we still find ourselves in the dark valley of discord and enmity? (Matthew 13:44). Click to enable/disable Google reCaptcha. When problems come, they forget all about Gods word. (Romans 11:11-14 RSV), For if their rejection means the reconciIiation of the world, what will their acceptance mean but life from the dead? Both men GLADLY, JOYFULLY gave up everything else to claim their new found treasure. He knew that the treasure was better than his home and his belongings. It always reminds me immediately of Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island, of Long John Silver, and doubloons and pieces-of-eight, pegleg pirates, and all the exciting things usually associated with the idea of buried treasure. And for joy over it he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field: The treasure so wonderful that Jesus would give all to purchase is the individual believer. And as we go through life we are the people who some day discover him. Ask: Does anyone know where pearls come from? People bring the same charge against Jesus today; I see those associated with Him, and they seem lowly or very normal; Jesus must also not be special., c. Where then did this Man get all these things: Their reception of Jesus was not welcoming or friendly. III. Now we turn to these three private parables given to the disciples: The parable of the hidden treasure, the parable of the pearl of great price, and the parable of the dragnet. The nation would not have it, would not have him, and they rejected him. God has gathered this nation together again, brought in the people from the outlying countries of the world, gathered his dispersed from the four corners of the earth, and brought them back into the land. Our Lord came and he bought the whole field so that someday he might use the treasure hidden in it to make the world blossom with glory. The previous three parables (the wheat and the tares, the mustard seed, and the leaven) each spoke of corruption in the kingdom community. As we can imagine, he was afraid that when people heard about his discovery, they would sneak onto his land and grab whatever pieces of emerald they could find. That shows how much he valued this pearl of great price, and how much Jesus values His people. The total weight of the emeralds was about 3,300 carats. He states a case where a man would actually "sacrifice his property," and practice diligence and watchfulness to obtain the wealth which he had discovered. b. The parables describe how the kin (g)dom of heaven emerges from something almost invisible to the eye and grows exponentially, offering us sustenance, a treasure worthy of all our attention and resources. The wheat comes into Gods barn from all over the world, from all ranks of society, from all ages of Gods church. How do you find this secret? They fit together but they are not talking about exactly the same thing. When they were cut and polished, they were worth millions of dollars. When he found it, what did he do? (Just as a comparison, the diamond on a womans wedding ring may be about one-quarter or one-half of a carat.) Jesus is not saying that you must go out and sell everything you own. The main idea is that the disciples who had just claimed to understand what Jesus taught are now responsible to bring forth their understanding to others, as if they were distributing from the storehouse of their wisdom and understanding. Our heavenly Father, how we thank you for the marvelous truth that you, Lord, have bought the world, that it belongs to you, and that you shall some day rule and reign in power and glory in its midst and all your promises shall be fulfilled. Assuming that the disciples did understand, they had an advantage over many among the multitudes. They have not found it yet. The nation's glory was gone. Then she asked him for the secret and Solomon took her to the temple and there he showed her the worship of Jehovah, showed her how this nation was related to the God of glory and that it was their understanding of God which produced the magnificence she had seen. - Matthew 13:44 We are not sure what this man was doing in someone else's field.
